Allegations of Cover-Up in Zubeen Garg Case

Guwahati, Sept 30: Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), has accused the ruling BJP government of trying to obscure the investigation into the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg.

Gogoi stated, “What we are witnessing is not an investigation but a cover-up. The two key individuals implicated—the manager and the event organizer, as identified by the Chief Minister—are being allowed to take vacations instead of being interrogated by the police. The Chief Minister claims they cannot be called in for questioning due to Durga Puja. Why are they being treated like VIPs? Is it because Zubeen Garg's manager has close connections with BJP leaders in Jorhat? Or is it due to the event organizer, Shyamkanu Mahanta, having ties with BJP officials in Delhi and Dispur?” during a press conference.

He continued, “A closer look reveals that Zubeen Garg’s manager was closely associated with BJP leaders in Jorhat, who were leveraging this relationship for political gain. Furthermore, Shyamkanu Mahanta has been involved in events like the North East India Festival, which predominantly features NDA Chief Ministers and BJP Central ministers, with little representation from other parties.”

Gogoi expressed concern over the investigation's direction, stating, “The police are arresting Zubeen Garg's supporters and even assaulting his fans, while the main suspects remain free to tamper with evidence and coordinate their actions without any interference from law enforcement.”

To demand a thorough investigation and accountability for the accused, the APCC plans to launch a ‘Justice for Zubeen Garg’ campaign starting October 3, which will include candlelight vigils and marches throughout Assam.

“As long as Himanta Biswa Sarma is the Chief Minister, the truth about Zubeen Garg's death will remain hidden from the people of Assam. He will ensure that nothing is disclosed to the public,” Gogoi asserted.

He also pointed out that the findings of the second post-mortem conducted by the Assam government have not been made public, while the report from the post-mortem carried out in Singapore is known to the public. “The details of the second post-mortem in Assam remain undisclosed,” he added.
